Uptower welding repair of stress cracks in a bed frame, including NDT before and after repair, milling, WPS-based welding, grinding, inspection and full documentation.
Cracks in the bed frame are a serious fault, as they can affect the structural rigidity of the nacelle. If the damage progresses, it may increase the risk of misalignment in the driveline, place additional strain on components and lead to longer periods of downtime.
The scope of work included welding repairs at height to address stress cracks in the bed frame of a wind turbine.
NDT was carried out prior to commissioning to verify crack propagation in relation to the agreed scope of repair. The damaged area was milled, welded in accordance with a specially developed WPS, and ground after the welding work was completed.
Following the repair, the area was inspected using penetrant testing and the findings were supported by photographs, inspection points and technical documentation.
